Both the Cray C90 and C916 are part of the Cray C90 series and are vector processor supercomputers. However, the 916 could couple with the Cray T3D to support massively parallel processing. The C916 was an enhanced version of the C90 with 16 processors and 16 GB of SRAM. The C916 had a peak performance of 16 GFLOPS.

In 1991, Cray released the C90, which was based on the Cray Y-MP architecture. Compared to the Y-MP, the C90 processor supplied three times the performance of the Y-MP processor. As an upgrade from the Cray Y-MP, the Cray C90 doubled the maximum number of processors in a system from eight to 16. The C90 also featured a faster 4.1 nanoseconds clock cycle and dual vector pipeline. However, the C90 series kept the same Model E IOS and UNICOS operating system as the earlier Y-MP Model E.
